Open Mic: Kathy Griffin and Tyler Shields
On Tuesday, May 30, 2017, TMZ published an image of comedian Kathy Griffin styling a pussy-bow top, while holding Donald Trump's decapitated, bloody head. This image is from a photo shoot of Kathy Griffin by photographer Tyler Shields which chastises President Trump, especially for his comments directed at Megyn Kelly during the presidential election in which he said, "You could see there was blood coming out of her eyes, blood coming out of her wherever."
The internet blew up over this controversial image. Griffin was subsequently fired from CNN, and on May 30, she made a public apology on her Twitter account.
The controversy over this image raises many questions about the purpose and power of photography. In our society which champions free speech, should an image of this sort be chastised? allowed? censored? Should there be limits to artistic expression?
