Weekend Portfolio: Adriana Alpizar

Adriana Alpizar is a New Jersey based photographer. She received her BA in Film from Rowan University and found her passion for still imagery while studying the moving image. Before her passion for photo, she fell in love with video art and from there, went to take digital photography classes where she was able to develop her eye to create this photo series. Three of her inspirations are Jenny Drumgoole, a Philadelphia-based performance artist, Laurel Nakadate, Philip-Lorca diCorcia, and Gregory Crewdson. Adriana has been featured in two shows and a juried show at her University.

In this series “Some Boys ”, I chose to primarily photograph men with isolation in both composition and light. I placed them alone or intimately with one another. By doing this, I am able to reverse the roles and bring forth the idea of the female gaze upon men. I find the idea of the male gaze to be a never ending topic of discussion. Specifically, what it means to both men and women. I read a great body of work by John Berger called ‘Ways of Seeing’, where he explains the presentation and expectations of women vs. men, and how differently they are photographed. Men are photographed with promise and women with vulnerability. This work is to renounce the ever known “male gaze”. It is no longer about how men watch. It is about my own dominance over the phrase. This work is meant to take back.
