From daguerreotypes to camera obscuras, nothing from the 19th century is off limits in this contemporary exhibition that is as retrospective as it is innovative. Jerry Spagnoli curates the works of artists such as Takashi Arai, Adam Fuss, Sally Mann, and Stephen Berkman (above) among others in order to bring life to the industrial genesis of photography. As a hypnotic homage, “A New and Mysterious Art” toys with the idea of newness by bridging past techniques with a coeval approach by offering a fresh and compelling view of photographic revival and reinvention.

Chic and voyeuristic, Prager delivers a dramatic ode to mise-en-scène in her Parisian short film which examines the tension between the spectator and the performer. The film, along with Prager’s photographs, showcases moments of pure drama that are heightened by an anxious nouvelle nouvelle vague atmosphere in which she manipulates character and perspective in an acutely emotional fashion. Commissioned by the Paris Opera Ballet, La Grande Sortie is a film you must see.

Capturing the urban and natural landscapes of Mexico, Alex Webb’s latest exhibition breathes with color and allure. The collection deftly reveals a visceral dimension of Mexican culture that is neither overly romanticized or exotic; but rather, it sustains a candid and vibrant narrative of everyday life.

When thinking of “otherworldly” subjects, laundry is not one that should immediately come to mind. Yet with Sally Gal’s new series Aerial, she achieves just that in her 12th solo show at the Julie Saul Gallery. In her series, Gal creates large scale photographs of richly colorful, playful, publicly exposed clothing. Blasé laundry transforms into alien flora, imaginatively becoming a radiant and enthralling collection that glimmers with uncanny uniqueness.

Distorting concepts of visibility and memory, Zoe Leonard creates a multimedia exhibition that thrusts the viewer in the crux and aftershocks of World War II. The presentation is as daring as it is poignant, as Leonard deliberately alters photographs for the sake of probing the paradox of chaotic organization in order to bridge the gaps between what is considered objective history and what is considered the subjective past. In Treasury Rooms, Fiorese goes behind the scenes of some of Italy’s most famous museums to photograph the archives otherwise hidden to the public. This tantalizing glimpse of private corridors is as at once metaphysical and mysterious, evoking a deeper sense of curiosity for what lies beneath the surface of prestigious museums such as the Uffizi Gallery and the National Gallery of Modern Art.

Silent Speed by artist Marco Breuer brings form and abstraction back into play. Like much of Breuer’s work, this series deals with the balance between free flowing shapes interacting in negative and positive space. The array of shapes Breuer creates range anywhere from human forms to logos. In this series, unique from his previous works, Breuer puts himself in front of the camera to make his own human form become the abstraction.

Polidori’s exhibition is a compilation of many different sets of his renowned photographs, several of which are from his “dendritic cities” which will be displayed in the US for the first time. Urgent and vast, Polidori enables images to frame themselves by letting their infrastructes go outside the lines. The range that Polidori’s reflective work covers in this exhibition also portrays chaos and abandonment, grabbing hold of a tumultuous urban mystique.

LETTERS IN THE DARK: FRANZ KAFKA AND MILENA JESENSKÁ

A meditation on the interpersonal vicissitudes of World War II, Letters in the Dark examines and recreates the elusive affair between the iconic writer Franz Kafka and Milena Jesenská, a journalist who died in a Nazi concentration camp. Hall tenaciously pieces back together the fragments of their enigmatic relationship with video projections and photographs of their correspondence. Although many of Jesenská’s letters are destroyed, Hall floods the viewer with alternate letters that serve as poetic visuals, imagining and honoring this fatefully lost romance.
