Polaris is a group exhibition at CCNY’S Baxter St Gallery featuring works by Ofri Cnaani, Eric Corriel, Zachary Fabri, Mario Navarro, and Igor Revelis and curated by Joey Lico. Lico, who is currently co-chair for the Executive Committee for The Whitney Museum Contemporaries, invited these artists to tell a larger narrative of injustice and encourage audience members to engage in a discourse on systems of control.

Although the artists each come from different backgrounds, through their respective mediums, were able to elicit their personal struggles within systems of control. For example, Ofri Canaani, a Brooklyn based artist, presented a participatory performance titled ⌘D (Command+ Duplicate) meant to represent a bureaucratic system that enlarges the divide between government and those governed. Mario Navarro, a Mexican American artist, explores inequity through architecture, while Igor Revelis, born in Ukraine, began as a graffiti artist and now incorporates other mediums to challenge what it means to be away from “home.” Polaris displays themes of violence, surveillance, segregation, social and political injustice and where we stand within all of this.
