Javier Izquierdo is a Spanish photographer from Palma de Mallorca. Notes from a Distance is a project started by Izquierdo in 2007 with a mission to show the more intimate and personal nuances of place. Having no formal photography training, Izquierdo took inspiration from Robert Frank, Gary Winogrand, and Eugene Richards. He initially tries to imitate their style, which eventually evolved to him realizing his own unique aesthetic
Shot in over 30 countries, Izquierdo’s photography explores the intangible thing that makes up the essence of a place. The project started after a break up when Izquierdo realized he didn’t have an attachment to his hometown any longer. He decided to invest his time and money on traveling as much as possible. Izquierdo took to exploring from behind his camera. He claims he wasn’t interested in visiting popular tourist spots or monuments, so instead he took to the streets and neighborhood markets in hopes of discovering the more candid interactions between locals.
The goal was to take photos in a very raw fashion. The photographer focused on capturing moments that he had a personal connection with, experiences that touched him deeply. Izquierdo says, “At the end I realized even though I’ve been traveling very far from home I’ve always been taking pictures of myself; the landscapes that I’ve found are just the landscapes of my own heart.” Notes from a Distance is an oeuvre of the global spirit. Izquierdo’s attention is paid to the otherwise forgotten moments in time and space, the stuffing that fills us up and makes us matter. People make the place, and Izquierdo’s devotion to the wonder of just being is a sort of deliverance.
