Art Out: ARTIST MICKALENE THOMAS HONORED AT ICP Spotlights

Honoree Mickalene Thomas was celebrated for her photographs and paintings that examine and reimagine concepts of female identity and beauty by the 250-person crowd, including: Racquel Chevremont, Stefano Tonchi, Zoë Buckman, Rashid Johnson,Alexandra Bell, Elizabeth Mayhew, Gillian Laub, Agnes Gund, Antwaun Sargent,Shari Loeffler, Isolde Brielmaier, Prof. Beverly Guy-Sheftall, Magali Smith, Michi Jigarjian, Joyce Cowin, David Maupin, Debbie Wilpon, and Elizabeth Kahane; ICP Trustees Stephanie Shuman, Diane Tuft, Renee Harbers Liddell, Lisa Dennison,Almudena Legorreta, Adam Fuss, and Bicky Kellner, along with ICP Spotlights Co-Chairs Peggy Anderson, Sheree Hovsepian, and Debby Hymowitz; and ICP Executive Director Mark Lubell.
The program featured a conversation between Prof. Beverly Guy-Sheftall and Mickalene Thomas about the artist’s career and inspiration. The event culminated with the acknowledgement of photographer Cheney Orr, this year’s recipient of the Mary Ellen Mark Scholarship, which supports emerging talent in the field. Overall, the event raised critical funds for ICP’s education and exhibition programs—a portion of which was garnered via the silent auction of photographs featuring work from Zanele Muholi, Ryan McGinley, and Graciela Iturbide, and more.

Launched in 2011, the annual ICP Spotlights benefit luncheon celebrates the significant contributions of women in photography and film. Past honorees include Lynsey Addario, Laurie Simmons, Lauren Greenfield, Carrie Mae Weems, Mary Ellen Mark, Shirin Neshat, and Stephanie Sinclair.
