I took this image on a trip to Port Newark in the spring of 2019 led by a former teacher of mine. She works with the Seamen's Church Institute, North America's largest mariners' service agency, and occasionally brings a small group of photographers to view the port.
We spent most of the day walking aboard supermassive container ships with crews of about ten men. I really wanted to wander around the scrapyard, but it was strictly off limits. The best view I got was from the deck of a ship. As far as I could see, machines of unimaginable size and strength transported and shredded metal in every direction. Everything was in motion. There is only one person visible in the entire frame, who I noticed only after I developed the roll.
