Other-on

These images were taken as part of a series of photographs entitled “Other-on,” an ongoing collaboration of visual works between artists June Kim and Michelle Cho. This body of work from early 2016 is an exploration of identity, relativity and finding the surreal in the every day. The artists were particularly inspired by vividly surreal architecture and how these structures act as windows of possibility within the quotidian. Through traditional photography and digital manipulation, they create a narrative to explore the multiplicity of identities within oneself. Subjects’ faces are kept anonymous or visually obstructed so as to allow the viewer to interact with the works more directly—to fill the blank canvas of faceless beings with themselves.

June Kim is a photographer and artist whose work explores intimacy and the interiority of her subjects. Flowing between fashion, editorial and moving image, she imbues all of her work with a sense of care, calm and poise. She is currently based in Los Angeles working between coasts, focusing on portraiture and familial relationships in her personal work.

Michelle Cho is a photographer and filmmaker based in London. She received an M.A. in filmmaking at the London Film School and is one of the founders of Other People, a London-based production company. Her work has been featured in IGNANTAesthetica MagazineGestalten and more.
