By Gabriela Bittencourt

She began most days disentangling herself from her warm dreams. So when she awoke, she was tired already? only twenty-some odd years and she was tired already? from the trek that led her here.

Here is life and the world pleads her to be present. The world is hers, so they say. Sure doesn’t feel that way— leaving her dreams to live her life. Yet she keeps on believing in crossing the two someday like when she turned the artificial droplets from the shower head into actual rain droplets from a silver-cloud. Of course it took her awhile to will-it true. At first she’d close her eyes and stammer “It’s r- r- raining.” It took practice. The next few times in the shower when she tried to speak it into existence, it sounded like she was wobbling on a tightrope on the inside. Then she began to will-it on the inside and outside. Not only did she say, “It will rain,” but it became a mentality: it will rain. And with her good-will and a hint of imagination, it began to pour. She scribbled down it on a notepad and tacked the notepad on the refrigerator so that every night of an arduous day she’d be reminded of what she could do.

That night she went to bed with the promise of tomorrow being a new day, a different life, and an umbrella.
