At the end of the novel Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, a young boy imagines his father at the moment he jumped off the Twin Towers on 9/11. He envisions his father suspended in air mid-fall, floating eternally in the ether. This is the concept behind the late Sarah Charlesworth’s hauntingly beautiful images in her collection Stills.
Stephen Mallon: The story behind that aircraft was that it was taken out by a flock of Canadian geese that took off at the wrong moment and got ingested into these turbo fans inside the engines. The engines are designed to handle this. They literally take frozen turkeys and shoot them out during testing. But this was the worst case scenario.
Mary Reid Kelley: We've been together since 2002, but we didn't start working together until 2008. We've been collaborating together for ten years, so it's been a slow roll towards this full collaboration together. When we started making films together it was just under my name, but gradually Pat's involvement became much more significant and we started crediting him over the years.
Molly Soda: I’ve always been drawn to private spaces and the bedroom as a backdrop. The bedroom is where we connect with each other virtually and I love being able to get a glimpse of that when I’m online. The desktop in some ways is like the second bedroom for me, housing all of my clutter and intimate thoughts.
Ken Schles: There’s an inherent risk in the way I’m approaching the subject matter. Trump has energized a lot of people to stand up for their beliefs that wouldn’t have previously. I’d probably count myself among them. I’m definitely risking my bodily self. I’ve been arrested 8 times in the last 14 months.
