Sponsored by Hearst, Thomson Reuters, and Harbers Studios, the 2018 ICP Infinity Awards drew more than 500 attendees from the worlds of art, business, entertainment, fashion, philanthropy, and photography, and raised $1.2 million for ICP’s exhibitions and educational programs including its youth-focused community programs.

The inspiring evening was a celebration of achievements in photography and visual culture. On hand to accept their 2018 Infinity Award were: Bruce Davidson (Lifetime Achievement); Alexandra Bell (Applied); Samuel Fosso (Art); Dayanita Singh (Artist’s Book); Amber Bracken (Documentary and Photojournalism); Natalie Keyssar (Emerging Photographer); Women Photograph (Online Platform and New Media); Thomson Reuters (Trustees Award); and Juergen Teller (Special Presentation). Maurice Berger (Critical Writing and Research) received the award in absentia.

The powerful gathering had a decidedly activist bent—with a heavy focus on representation and race in media and the industry as a whole—underscoring the need for photographers and photojournalists in today’s world. From Alexandra Bell, winner of the ICP Infinity Award for Applied work, who talked about the need to change the ultra biased narrative in mainstream news, to Natalie Keyssar, winner of this year’s Emerging Photographer Infinity Award, who encouraged the crowd to “just do something” to address inequities and injustices in the world.

Introduced by his two daughters, ICP Infinity Award Lifetime Achievement recipient Bruce Davidson took the stage to a standing ovation. Davidson told of the first time he saw a photograph develop—watching the image appear out of nowhere. He shared about the internal process of his photography and the lessons learned from shooting his now iconic images. His advice to the crowd: “The main thing is to just keep clicking.”
