Project: Colour Vision

Colour Vision is not a series per se but rather a larger project consisting of a number of individual colour photographs of various architectural subjects, ranging from residential and office building exteriors to car park and hotel interiors. The project is ongoing and I’m always looking to add new images to it. Unlike my other series, I did not visualise each photograph in advance, it was a purely organic project driven by what I saw and wanted to capture with each image being treated individually, focusing on the colour, texture and mood.

"I think the color is one of those things that are often taken for granted. Subtle shades of color can affect mood and perception of a scene, strong colors can send a strong subconscious message about the subject. Colors can clash causing confusion to the eye, creating multiple focal points and resulting in a poor photograph. To address these issues, I filled the frame with one dominant color that becomes the focal point of the image instantly drawing the eye of the viewer to it. In such cases, the building itself provides texture and depth to the photograph while color is used to evoke different emotions.

I believe that contemporary architecture is particularly well suited to my style of photography. I search for interesting shapes, dramatic angles and polished surfaces, paying particular attention to the way various surfaces render light and shadow. Each photograph in this project was composed and processed differently, with some compositions being symmetrical and repetitive creating a sense of order and calmness and some being more dynamic emphasising the uniqueness of the structure and bringing it to life." Describe your creative process in one word.
Curiosity

What is the last book you read or film you saw that inspired you?
I love reading, it opens up so many possibilities for me and gets my imagination going. Having read so many different genres ranging from history, religion and philosophy to fiction, especially Japanese fiction, I find in them the recurring themes of human emotions, struggle for freedom, pursuit for the nature of reality and the ultimate search for the meaning of life.

One of those special and possibly the most mystical of all the Japanese novels I have read is ‘The Goddess Chronicle’ by Natsuo Kirino. Based on the ancient Japanese creation myth of Izanami and Izanaki, this is a wonderful tale of love, betrayal and vengeance. The story unfolds on a mystical island in the shape of teardrop where two sisters are born into a family of oracles. One is admired for her otherworldly beauty, the other learns to live in her sister’s shadow. One is chosen to become the next Oracle, serving the realm of light, while the other is forced to serve the realm of darkness—destined to spend eternity guiding the spirits of the deceased to the underworld.

What songs do you play the most in your music library?
I have a very diverse taste in music and my playlist includes anything from rock, grunge to industrial and trance. My track selection depends on my mood and activity. I often take long walks around my neighbourhood to let the creative impulse shine upon my mind and the song that currently helps with this process is a trance track ‘Energise’ by Nick Lunn, YOMC & Tecno-Punk.

How do you take coffee?
Black, no sugar. Occasionally I treat myself to a soy latte.
