Is & Isn’t

In the decisively ongoing series Is and Isn’t, Yael Eban creates a peripatetic journey through spatial encounters, transporting the viewer to a foreign yet familiar place. Eban has spent her life oscillating back and forth between two disparate cultural landscapes, Israel and America. Eban captures optical illusions that reference her family’s homeland as well as her own transnational journeys. The unmanipulated 35mm photographs are her negotiation of place, featuring layered and paradoxical subject matter—inside vs. outside, native vs. transplant. Landing somewhere between the concrete and the abstract, these images are a study in elastic geometry, often suggesting buried histories and multiple levels of truth and fiction. Eban’s photographic language requires a double-take to be read, creating a moment of suspension amidst the chaotic scroll of digital excess.
