WEEKEND PORTFOLIO: MYU INOUE

Images and Text by Myu Inoue

Myu Inoue (b. Hong Kong) is a Japanese and Chinese photographer who is based in New York. Her work is influenced by her mixed Japanese and Chinese upbringing. Her practice explores attachments to childhood hometowns and the ways in which they later manifest in adulthood. She also incorporates these reflections on cultural upbringing into the narratives of her fashion and editorial work.

“Spring comes in the Densest Shade of Blue” is dedicated to portraying the pulsing, tacit frictions of disillusioned adolescence. In Japanese culture, youth is branded with the phrase “青春,” which translates to “Blue Spring” in English. I challenge a culture that advertises adolescence as nothing other than fresh and supple, yet perpetuates a rigorous working spirit that normalizes the compromise of one’s wellbeing at the expense of productivity.
