Allegorical Depths: The Symbolist Work of Makis Makris

Photography as a way to capture complex emotions when we navigate the tension between uncertainty and hope. Surreal and poetic lenses, transforming the period of confinement into a cathartic medium to confront and transcend anxiety and uncertainty. Through the lens of television broadcasts, Greek photographer Makis Makris provides a window to the outside world, inviting introspection and challenging the status quo.

"The confinement period possibly became the culmination of an inner journey—a quest to restore equilibrium in the interplay of reality and the unknown, the familiar and unfamiliar, ultimately defining our place in the continuum of time and space," Makris explains. Drawing inspiration from the story of Odysseus, who underwent a grueling journey home filled with obstacles that tested his resilience and perseverance, 'Odysseus’ Clepsydra' is an allegorical expression. This collection symbolizes the complex path taken through life's challenges, recounting the emotional highs and lows experienced in the journey towards self-discovery and restoration.

Odysseus' Clepsydra seeks to visualize all the emotional transitions that take place during our difficult and laden with dubiousness journey into the world. The eternal inner struggle is unceasing and equivocal. Positive thoughts, dreams, and desires pitted against fears and unease, not only for bygones but also for what is yet to come”. states Makris.

"Odysseus 'Clepsydra'“ uses photography and archives to illustrate the ongoing battle between good and evil within the human psyche. Each image represents different emotions, including hope, fear, familiarity, and uncertainty. Within dark atmospheres Makris uses symbols that encourage viewers to think about their own life experiences. “In the dark and chaos governing our life I believe there is hope, a light, which though not necessarily bright, can however show us the way.” concludes.
