For a word used when referring to organizing a sock drawer, ‘curate,’ whose root word, curare meaning, “to care for,” implies a parenthood of sorts between the curator and the curated. Issue No. 25 of Musée Magazine explores different approaches to art curation. Sarah Meister, former curator for the Robert B. Menschel Department of Photography at MoMA, uses it to garner a sense of respect and wonder for art, while Martin Barnes, Senior Curator of Photographs at the V&A, sees himself as a “cultural producer,” and Antwaun Sargent, director and curator at Gagosian, focuses on black bodies, pushing back against institutional elitism in photography.
